The trend of re-releasing South films to make them acquainted with the new generation of audience has been a staple in the last few years. This has applied to both commercially successful, as well as unsuccessful films. Many directors believe what did not work years ago, may work today. Recently, the Karthi and Tamannaah Bhatia-starrer Paiyaa was re-released in theatres; it received a good response. The movie was a road film, with much of the action taking place between a journey from Mumbai to Chennai. During the screening of Paiyaa, director N Lingusamy announced the re-release of yet another of his films, Anjaan.
Anjaan starred Suriya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu in the lead roles. Anjaan was touted to be one of the biggest films of Suriya back in 2014, but the film failed both commercially and critically. Anjaan had opened well due to the hype, but collections started dropping from the second day itself. Two years after the film’s release and failure, director N Lingasamy had become the target of online trolls for a statement that he had made before the film’s release.
In an event for the promotions of Anjaan, Lingasamy had said that he had tuned himself to the script of the film and that he had applied all that he had learnt in the field of cinema over the years in Anjaan. Soon, social media became the hub of memes, trolling him over his statements, after Anjaan failed.
This is why the director has now decided to re-release Anjaan in a heavily edited version. He said that he took the negative feedback under consideration and will edit out the scenes that faced maximum criticism. He believes that the edited version of Anjaan will do better at the box office. The release date of the film has not yet been revealed. It is interesting to note that it was in Anjaan that Suriya ventured into playback singing for the first time, singing the song titled Ek Do Teen.
