During a time dominated by action films in Hindi cinema, Yash Chopra broke the mould with the romantic film Chandni, which presented a love triangle that captivated audiences. Interestingly, even the distributor initially had doubts about its success. Chandni, starring Rishi Kapoor and Sridevi, remains a memorable blockbuster in Bollywood. Vinod Khanna also played a significant role in Chandni.

In the 1980s, Yash Chopra faced a setback in his career after several unsuccessful ventures into action films. It was during this period that he decided to revert to his strengths by creating a romantic musical. This decision marked a return to what would become synonymous with the “Yash Chopra style” — films centred around heroines, characterised by romance, drama, and musical elements. This shift ultimately revitalised his career.

During the making of Chandni, Yash Chopra faced numerous challenges and had to make several changes, including altering the climax of the film. The production also encountered delays, leading to scepticism and discouragement from people advising Chopra to reconsider his decision to pursue the project. Even the film’s distributor initially backed out. Yash Chopra remained steadfast in his vision and persisted in making the film. His determination paid off when Chandni was finally released and became a success.

This was Yash Chopra’s first collaboration with Sridevi, with whom he again worked in Lamhe two years later Yash Chopra had disclosed in an interview that initially, no actor was willing to take on the role of Lalit in the film because he appeared only in the second half and was considered relatively small. After a lot of persuasion, Vinod Khanna agreed to do the role and breathed life into the character. Chandni is now considered one of Yash Chopra’s finest films.
