Actress Sonali Kulkarni worked with director Vidhu Vinod Chopra in the 2000 film Mission Kashmir. The film also featured Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt and Preity Zinta. In a recent chat, Sonali recalled an argument she had with Vidhu, who is otherwise known for having a no-nonsense attitude. She recalled how the director yelled at her once.
Speaking to Siddharth Kannan, Sonali Kulkarni said, “One time he yelled at me really bad. We were shooting in Srinagar in October. During this time, we stayed in the Nehru guest house. It was extremely cold then, and I even got a fever. For two days, they didn’t shoot even a single scene with me. We used to have meetings every day. So, during one of those meetings, I told Vidhu Vinod Chopra, ‘I haven’t shot for two days, can you please send me back?’ He was like, ‘Tu pagal hai? You think I will let you return from here?’ I also yelled back, ‘So, when are you going to shoot my scenes?’”
She added, “At that time, I didn’t have the sense that I was talking to Vidhu Vinod Chopra. My only thought was that if my scenes are not planned, let me go and call me back when you have a plan. I didn’t think much about ticket prices and other things.” She added, “When he said, ‘Tu pagal hai’, I replied, ‘I am not mad. I know my lines and I know my role.’ After hearing this, Vidhu called someone and said, ‘Feed her something, she has a fever’. Eventually, I shot my scene.”Sonali recalled that the director was extremely short-tempered during the shoot.
In an earlier interview with Times of India, Vidhu Vinod Chopra spoke about his anger issues and mentioned, “I was a very arrogant, difficult, volatile, and violent man.” He even shared that during his time at the Film and Television Institute of India, he used to carry a big knife with him as he was against ragging. Meanwhile, on the work front, Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s last film was 12th Fail, starring Vikrant Massey as the lead.
