Yo Yo Honey Singh has been a trailblazer in revolutionizing Punjabi music, bringing it to a global audience and making it a sensation in Bollywood. However, his lyrics have often sparked controversy, with many accusing them of being objectionable and misogynistic. In a recent interview with the Times of India, the rapper-singer opened up about these allegations, questioning why he’s often singled out while other artists like Gulzar are not.
He stated, “I don’t give a s*** but I think I should answer this.” Singh candidly addressed the criticism, pointing out that lyrics by respected writers like Gulzar, such as ‘Beedi Jalaile Jigar Se piya,’ were never questioned for their potential misogyny. “Jigar kahan hota hai aurat ka? ‘Zuban pe laga namak ishq ka’, why is he talking about the tongue of a woman…main yeh sab sunke bada hua hoon. Sirf main hi kyun galat hoon? This is misogynistic for me,” Singh remarked, further adding, “Main yeh sab sunke bada hua hoon. Sirf main hi kyun galat hoon? Why is only Honey Singh targeted?”
For years, Honey Singh remained silent on these accusations, which he believes made him an easy target. Now, he’s ready to push back. When asked directly about objectifying women in his lyrics, he responded, “Aise thodi na hota hai,” arguing that past songs with similar themes were accepted without issue. He also referenced the infamous “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai” but pointed out that despite its controversial nature, the song’s creators are still revered as legends.
He added, “Par Honey Singh ko hi kyun gaali di jaati hai aur unko aap legend bolte ho? Main bhi bolta hoon. Hum dual personalities leke chal rahe hain aaj ke daur mein. Modernise bhi ho rahe hain par backward bhi soch rahe hain.”
Singh reflected on the dual standards in today’s world, saying, “We are carrying dual personalities – modernizing yet thinking backward.” Despite his impact on the industry with chart-topping hits like ‘Angreji Beat’, ‘Lungi Dance’, and ‘Chaar Botal Vodka’, he faced a career hiatus from 2014 to 2021 due to mental health struggles and substance abuse. Now, though back in the limelight, his recent albums have met with lukewarm reception.
Honey Singh is also the subject of an upcoming Netflix documentary, which will chronicle his illustrious career and personal battles, offering fans a deeper insight into his journey.
