It appears that Jo Koy’s upcoming stand up special might not see many Swifties in attendance. During his hosting of the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards, the comedian received a death stare from current pop queen Taylor Swift following a joke about the NFL frequently showing the singer’s reactions at boyfriend Travis Kelce’s games. Swift was present at the Beverly Hilton Hotel as she was nominated for her Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film in a new cinematic and box office achievement award category. A day after the event, speaking on Good Morning America, Koy expressed regret and felt bad about his joke aimed at the singer. However, he clarified that the intention was to poke fun at the NFL and not Swift, but he admits that the joke came off oddly.
He said, “I think when it was the Taylor one was just a little flat and it was a weird joke, I guess. But it was more on the NFL. I was trying to make fun of the NFL using cutaways and how the Globes didn’t have to do that. So it was more of a jab towards the NFL but it just didn’t come out that way. I wanted to give a little bit more of myself and I just felt a little short and that’s all. Everything was great, we were having a blast. It’s just that one joke, the NFL joke was just.”
For those not aware, during his Golden Globes monologue, Jo Koy humorously targeted various personalities, including Taylor Swift, which garnered mixed reactions. He joked, “A big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift. I swear, there’s more to go here. Sorry about that.”
The comedian expressed that hosting the event was a memorable but challenging experience. Reflecting on the preparation process, he described it as a crash course due to the limited time given. Following the call, he dedicated himself to constant writing and preparation without sleep. Despite the difficulty, Koy appreciated the support from his team.
Jo Koy described the journey to hosting the Golden Globes as uncertain initially, as the event’s location was unknown. However, CBS stepped in at the last moment, but many declined the hosting offer due to the scheduling conflict. However, Koy decided to take the opportunity, despite the challenges, stating, “Let’s try it, let’s go for it and let’s see what we can do in 10 days.”
During the special night, although Taylor Swift didn’t win the award, the singer was seen cheering for fellow artists.
