Barbie bagged the cinematic and box office achievement award at the 81st Golden Globes this year, beating Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert film. The star-studded ceremony was held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on January 7. It was the second win for Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, with the film also lifting the Best Original Song award for the track What Was I Made For. Despite losing out to Barbie, Taylor Swift won the hearts of millions by becoming the biggest cheerleader for the Greta Gerwig directorial. She was the first in the audience to lead a standing ovation, followed by the rest. A video of the noble gesture is now circulating widely across the internet.
The visual clip was dropped on X (formerly Twitter) by Variety magazine’s co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh. “Taylor Swift led the standing ovation for ‘Barbie’ as it won the Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement,” read the note accompanying the clip. The video shows Taylor Swift, decked up in a shimmery green dress, standing up amongst the crowd and clapping for Barbie’s phenomenal win. Following her, the other people present at the venue also start cheering and clapping for the film as Barbie’s cast and crew members take centre stage to receive the honour and express their gratitude.

Soon after the video surfaced on the internet, social media users were quick to appreciate Taylor Swift’s respected gesture. While one individual commented, “She’s not even an actress, and she’s the biggest star in the room” another agreed, “Taylor supports everyone. It’s admirable. There’s no bitterness.” “A class act always,” read a third remark.

Taylor Swift has been a regular at the Golden Globes. Since the singing sensation appeared at the event, she could not attend her partner and NFL player Travis Kelce’s football match, between his team Kansas City Chiefs, and Los Angeles Chargers. Swift has been nominated for Best Original Song four times. The first was for the track Safe and Sound in 2013, followed by Sweeter Than Fiction in 2014, Beautiful Ghosts in 2020, and Carolina in 2023. This year, she was fighting for the maiden award category — cinematic and box office achievement award.
Barbie surpassed some widely-acclaimed films including Oppenheimer, John Wick: Chapter 4, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Actress Emma Stone earned Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Poor Things.
