Legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar was all praises for Glenn Maxwell after the Australian all-rounder smashed a double century against Afghanistan to fire Australia into the World Cup 2023 semifinals. Riding on Maxwell’s unbeaten 201-run knock, the five-time World Cup champions chased down a target of 292 and set up a semifinal clash against second-placed South Africa.
Maxwell played arguably the best-ever ODI knock in history while chasing, his team was down to 91/7, but the 35-year-old snatched a win for his side from the jaws of defeat. What also made Glenn’s knock memorable was the fact that he was battling cramps throughout the inning, but showed an unbreakable spirit to stick around right until the end.
Tendulkar praised Maxwell for his never-give-up spirit, and also drew parallels between life and cricket, pointing to the fact that Maxwell’s cramps forced him to play big shots without any footwork of sorts, which was a treat to watch.

“Life and cricket have many parallels. Sometimes, like a spring, what pulls you back is also what propels you forward,” wrote Sachin on social media platform X.
“During yesterday’s game, @Gmaxi_32’s cramps constrained his footwork. He had to stay put at the crease, but that enabled him to have a steady head, watch the ball closely and let his hand-eye coordination do the work, backed by exceptional bat-speed,” he added.
“Different formats of the game, and stages of the game require different footwork. And sometimes, no footwork becomes great footwork too,” read the post from the Master Blaster further.

Maxwell broke numerous records and stitched the highest-ever partnership with Pat Cummins for a batting pair below number 8 and that too in a game where his team were on the cusp of defeat.
The 3-wicket win over Afghanistan takes Australia into the semifinals, they will play their final group game against Bangladesh in a dead-rubber tie, after which Cummins and Co. will gear up to face the Proteas for a place in the final.
