The parliament house on Wednesday witnessed a massive security breach after two men jumped from the visitors’ gallery to the Lok Sabha chambers popping up yellow smoke all around. The sudden turn of events caused huge chaos and panic among the parliamentarians after the intruders began to run towards the speaker’s chair.
Soon after the breach, the parliament complex was closed to visitors and the security protocols were revamped. Meanwhile, the Home Ministry later in the evening ordered a probe into the parliament security breach, which will be headed by the paramilitary CRPF chief.
As per the ministry statement, the enquiry panel will investigate the reasons for the breach in the security of Parliament, identify lapses and recommend further action. The Committee will submit its report with recommendations at the earliest.
Parliament Breach: What Are New Security Protocols
- Visitors gallery to be covered in glass to prevent people from jumping into the chamber.
- Body scanners to be installed (to ensure objects hidden can be detected).
- A separate gate could be installed for visitors when re-entry is allowed.
- MPs only to enter and exit through the main gate.
- Media and staff members will have separate entry points.
- Movement of PAs and assistants of MPs is to be restricted.
This comes after the home ministry was asked to launch a security review of Parliament as members of the opposition at an all-party meeting demanded a thorough probe into the incident of two persons jumping into the Lok Sabha chamber and also sought action against BJP MP Prathap Simha who felicitated their passes.
The communication from Lok Sabha Secretariat to Special Secretary (Home) came as Speaker Om Birla convened the all-party meeting in which members from different parties flagged a variety of issues and raised security concerns in Parliament’s new building, more so as the security breach happened on the anniversary of the 2001 terror attack on the institution.
