New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal easily won the confidence motion in Delhi Assembly on Thursday with the support of the Congress, Janata Dal United and an Independents MLAs after delivering a stirring and emotional speech on the problems plaguing the city state.
The Aam Aadmi Party government sailed through the confidence motion getting 37 votes in favour with seven Congress MLAs, one from JDU and the lone Independent Rambeer Shokeen voting in favour with the Bharatiya Janata Party (31) and Shiromani Akali Dal (1) against it.
At the end of the debate, pro-tem Speaker Matin Ahmad asked those in favour to stand up followed by those against. Later, he declared the motion as passed and congratulated the Chief Minister before adjourning the house.
Kejriwal listed 17 issues that the people of Delhi face and sought the support of all the MLAs in finding a resolution to them. In his speech Kejriwal highlighted the VIP culture, day-to-day corruption, poor governance, lack of amenities while targeting the political class with failing to provide a robust administration.
He said that Delhi needs a new and stringent anti-corruption law, an end to the VIP culture and listed a 20-point action plan.
He appealed to all the Delhi MLAs to support the government in providing a people-friendly and clean government to the city while ending the debate of the motion moved by PWD Minister Manish Sisodia. The four-and-a-half-hour long debate ended with Kejriwal appealing to the members to decide "on which side they are" as the aam aadmi had already given his verdict.
Kejriwal began his speech by promising to weed out corruption. "I assure the Assembly that no one will be spared if found to be corrupt, whether it is done in the last 15 years or in our government. For AAP all those who want a corruption-free society and government are aam aadmi," he said.
After winning the confidence motion Kejriwal thanked all his supporters and called it a victory of the common man of Delhi.
"We have won the confidence motion and I would like to congratulate the people of Delhi. We have lot of challenges ahead of us," said Kejriwal outside the Assembly.
