New Delhi Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has directed the group of ministers (GoM) on Bhopal gas tragedy to meet immediately and report to the Cabinet within 10 days.
He directed that the GoM "may meet immediately to take stock of the situation arising out of the recent court judgement, to assess the options and remedies available to the government on the various issues involved and to report to the cabinet within 10 days," said a statement from the prime minister's office (PMO).
The GoM will consider making a fresh request to extradite Warren Anderson , former chairman of the American parent company Union Carbide Corp responsible for the Bhopal gas tragedy.
It will consider imposing compensation for gas victims and suggest the action required on remediation or clean up of the Union Carbide plant. site
The GoM was reconstituted to look at relief and rehabilitation of Bhopal gas victims after the verdict in the case on June 7. Union Home Minister P Chidambaram replaced Arjun Singh, who is no longer in government, as the head of the panel.
The other members are Ghulam Nabi Azad, M Veerappa Moily, S Jaipal Reddy, Kamal Nath, Selja, M K Alagiri, Prithviraj Chavan and Jairam Ramesh.
A Bhopal trial court has convicted eight Indian officials of Union Carbide for their criminal negligence that triggered the world's worst industrial disaster but all of them were released on bail the same.
The GoM will also consider appealing against the Bhopal court's verdict.
