Ernakulam: The electoral battle at Ernakulam in Kerala is not just between the Left and the Congress this time, Aam Admy Party (AAP) is also in the poll fray with their candidate Anita Pratap. The fate of the parties will depend on how the youngsters wish to vote this time. The big question raised by many is that will the youth of this urban city be with the traditional parties or will go for a change.
When Anita Pratap went out to meet the voters of her constituency, she was greeted by loud cheers, waving hands and many handing over brooms instead of garlands. Some people on the streets even raised the brooms on their hands in solidarity. She appealed to the young and the old people to cast their votes this time for a change and to keep away the corrupt political parties.
Anita Pratap said that the response was tremendous and if the hand waves can be translated to votes she will win with the biggest margin Ernakulam has ever seen.
Many city residents feel that AAP should be elected for a change. Noushad, said," Both the Left and the Congress has been in the power for so many years, but the condition of the common man has not improved. We do mot get drinking water. KV Thomas is here for the past 10 years, but nothing has improved for the poor."
Ernakulam is a strong hold of the Congress. KV Thomas, the UDF candidate said, "My election work begin the day I win and not when the elections are declared. I work closely with the people here, understanding their problems."
He added that the AAP has no relevance in Indian politics. "They don't have a commitment and just play on the emotional angle of the people like corruption, inaction of the government. But basically it has no relevance in Indian politics and especially in Kerala."
For many in constituency KV Thomas is the preferred choice. A voter Chacko said that he will win by a margin of at least one lakh votes due to the development activities in the constituency.
However the AAP candidate Anita Pratap states that there is so much of anger against KV Thomas as people say that he comes only at the time of elections. She hopes that all this anger and range for these parties will be translated into votes for her party.
The LDF has roped in retired IAS officer and former secretary to the President of India Christy Fernandez. While interacting with the people he talks about the acute drinking water problems and how he will work for solving this issue.
The major criticisms raised by the opponents against Christy Fernandez is that he is a non-political person and a section of people within the party is not very happy with him being the candidate.
The implementation of the food security bill has a special mention at the UDF campaign as it was KV Thomas, who played a major role in its implementation.
