Govt to table Lokpal Bill in RS with amendments
The proposed amendments include separating the Lokayukta from the Lokpal Bill.

New Delhi: The Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government has proposed several amendments to the Lokpal Bill which will be introduced in the Rajya Sabha on Monday. Dithering on the Lokpal Bill once again, the government will refer amended Bill to the Select Committee after it is tabled.

The proposed amendments are: Lokayukta will be separate from the Lokpal Bill, only government funded NGOs will be under the ambit of the Lokpal, the appointment of Lokpal will be made by a more balanced body where the government has no upper hand, the CBI should be independent of the government, corruption related cases will be heard by the designated courts first.

Meanwhile, anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare accused the government of bluffing, saying that there is no way the Lokpal Bill would be passed in the current session as the Budget Session of Parliament ends on Tuesday.

The government will bring the Bill in the Rajya Sabha on Monday despite opposition from parties like the JD(U) and RJD.

If the government fails to bring it in Parliament by Tuesday, then the government will be left with no option but to refer it to the Select Committee if the opposition demands.

Sources say that the government will have to agree to the Opposition's demand as it doesn't have numbers.
