Bangalore: With the war of words between Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and JDS Chief HD Kumaraswamy heating up once again, the politicians are now invoking divine intervention to help them battle each other.
Kumaraswamy who is determined to oust Yeddyurappa is never short of ammo. He has made startling revelations that the embattled Chief Minister has been desperately trying to buy his silence by offering a huge sum of money.
"He waited for me at a commoner's house for an hour. I rejected it," Kumaraswamy said.
Yeddyurappa, who is at a resort in neighbouring Kerala, immediately hit back at the Gowda family calling them perennial trouble-mongers.
The Chief Minister has invoked the God Manjunatha at Dharmasthala near Mangalore to reiterate his claim of innocence. Yeddyurappa has dared Kumaraswamy to come to Dharmsthala and swear that he had, indeed, approached him.
"Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa and his family will go to lord Manjunatha at Dharamsathla on June 27. Let Kumarswamy come to the temple on that day, so that God will decide who the culprit is," CM's Political Secretary Puttuswamy said.
Replying to this comment Kumaraswamy said that he will be at the temple on June 27.
"I will accept the challenge and will meet him at Dharmasthala," Kumaraswamy said.
Leaders invoking gods to proclaim their innocence or prove a point is not new to Karnataka politics. It's an age-old tradition which has got a boost with Yeddyurappa coming to power. Both the Chief Minister and the Opposition headed by Gowda are firm believers and spend half their time on visiting various temples and god men across India.
However it seems that the people of Karnataka are not amused. They want their elected leaders to be accountable to the voters and not gods and goddesses.
