New Delhi: The transition of power, from President Pranab Mukherjee to President Ram Nath Kovind, is now complete with Kovind taking oath on Tuesday morning as the 14th President of India. As Mukherjee moved out of the Rashtrapati Bhavan for Kovind to move in, the official Twitter handle of the President of India @RashtrapatiBhvn has now been handed over to Kovind and his team.
Meanwhile, President Pranab Mukherjee’s tweets have been archived with the Twitter handle @POI13. Mahima Kaul, Twitter’s Head of Public Policy, wrote in a blog post, “What's happening in India and around the world, happens on Twitter. Today, we are paving the way for the digital transition of the President of India’s official account. A smooth transition between administrations is one of President Pranab Mukherjee’s top priorities, and digital is a key pillar in today’s Internet age. The new President Ram Nath Kovind will now use the official President of India account @RashtrapatiBhvn. As President Pranab Mukherjee is the 13th President of India, his official Twitter account history will be archived with the handle @POI13.”
Kovind’s first tweet from the official handle read, “Honoured to be sworn in as the 14th President of India; would be carrying out my responsibilities with all humility #PresidentKovind.”
Meanwhile, Mukherjee’s last tweet is also displayed on the Twitter handle @POI13, “Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to Shri Ram Nath Kovind on being elected as the 14th President of India #PresidentMukherjee.”
The transition of Twitter handles in India is line with many other democracies of the world. When Donald Trump took oath as the 45th President of the United States, he took over the official Twitter handle @POTUS, in addition to his personal handle @realDonaldTrump. Meanwhile, Barack Obama’s tweets were archived under the handle @POTUS44. Mukherjee's verified personal Twitter account is @CitiznMukherjee.
