New Delhi: A day before taking oath as the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Thursday resigned as the Union Minister of Railways.
West Bengal Governor MK Narayanan issued an order appointing Mamata Banerjee as the chief minister on Tuesday.
Narayanan on Monday sent a letter to Mamata inviting her to form the government following her party's landslide victory in the Assembly elections.
On Sunday, the Trinamool Congress had formally staked claim to form the government shortly after Mamata was elected its Legislature Party leader.
Partha Chatterjee, the newly-elected Deputy Leader of the Trinamool Congress Legislature Party, had said on Monday that the Governor's invitation had been received by the party.
While staking claim to form the government, a list of 184 Trinamool Congress legislators was submitted to the Governor.
Trinamool's ally Congress has already submitted a letter of support to the government to be formed under Mamata's leadership.
Mamata will head the first non-Left government to take charge of West Bengal 34 years after a nine-party Left Front government had come to power led by Jyoti Basu in 1977.
Trinamool Congress and allies Congress and SUCI stormed to power in the state with a three-fourths majority signalling the historic changeover in the state's politics.
Congress, which secured 42 seats, is likely to join the Mamata Banerjee government.
