New Delhi: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has called a meeting of all Janata Dal (United) MLAs and MPs on June 15-16 to discuss the current crisis within the National Democratic Alliance, of which it is second-largest constituent. The NDA is on the verge of a break-up ever since Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was elevated to the post of the chairman of its 2014 election management committee.
The JD(U)'s opposition to Modi is quite well-known. And after the Gujarat CM's promotion and resignation by the BJP patriarch, LK Advani, immediately afterwards, the JD(U) seemed intent to quit the alliance.
However, JD(U) chief Shard Yadav exercised restraint in all his reactions to the happenings. He said, "The alliance is still on. We have called a JD(U) meeting. Everything will be discussed in the meeting."
Sources, however, said that Nitish had taken a strong objection to the statement by BJP chief Rajnath Singh, wherein he described Modi's elevation as the "call of justice".
The Congress, meanwhile, sensing its opportunity, has said that its doors are open to all "secular parties". Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath said, "All secular parties are welcome into the UPA."
The BJP, however, is not letting go. Advani, who went back into the party fold a day after he resigned, spoke to Nitish and Yadav on the phone on Wednesday on the latest developments. He is believed to have sought their continued cooperation with the NDA.
