New Delhi: The CPM, which had played a crucial role in setting up the Indian Coffee Houses across the country, is now turning a new leaf by coming up with a cool cafe in the capital — the May Day Cafe.
Touted as the 'country's first left wing cafe', the cafe would be launched on May Day, thereby adding to its symbolic value. It would be run by CPM's publishing house Left Word, which is behind many successful editions of Marxist literature. A brain child of CPI(M) General secretary Prakash Karat, it was launched in 1999.
The May Day Cafe has been conceived as a "left-wing cafe and bookstore," where intellectuals can meet and hold discussions on "anything under sun". According to its brochure, it would be "all about coffee, comrades and books".
The Lefties are learnt to have realised the importance of having "coffee space" as the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), till recently a CPM bastion where the CPM intellectuals had a free run, is increasingly becoming inaccessible to the party comrades after it has been usurped by the more aggressive All India Students Association (AISA).
Apart from revolutionary discussions interspersed with "excellent Coorgi coffee," the May Day Cafe will also provide one with "exquisite" tea from Darjeeling and Assam along with snacks.
Those with an intellectual bend can also buy books — both fiction and non-fiction – from the cafe. If one feels that revolutionary zeal is missing in all these items, then there is the 'Laal Band' from Pakistan, playing out on the inaugural day.
