New Delhi: The second phase of the Municipal Council polls in Maharashtra will be held on Tuesday. In the second phase, 18 municipal councils will go to polls, while counting of votes for 44 municipal councils will be taken up on December 14.
In the third and fourth phases, elections for two and seven municipal councils will take place on December 16 and 23 respectively. On December 17 counting of votes for 12 municipal councils will take place, while that of the seven councils will be held on December 23.
The ruling Congress and NCP emerged triumphant in the first phase of the Municipal Council polls. Both parties, which contested the polls separately captured power in more than half of the 132 seats.
The opposition parties, Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to bag just 14 civic bodies.
The results suggest that anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare and his campaign failed to have any affect on the elections.
The result is also interesting as the NCP and the Congress were not in an alliance in many regions.
