Rural, Urban development equally important: Tewari
Manish Tewari on Wednesday said the development of infrastructure in urban and rural areas is equally important.

New Delhi: Information and Broadcasting minister Manish Tewari on Wednesday said the development of infrastructure in urban and rural areas is equally important.

"Whether it has been the UPA government or the governments before it, there has been a belief that development of both cities and towns in important. As far as infrastructure is concerned, it is true that there is shortage of funds for infrastructure but it is not right to say that governments prefers developing villages to cities," Tewari said.

"Sixty five per cent of our population lives in villages and to focus on their development also is a duty of a sensitive government," he added.

Tewari made this comments while participating in a discussion organised by news channel ABP. Former BJP President Nitin Gadkari said that due to the "neglect" of agriculture and rural economy, the strength of the urban population is increasing.

Gadkari said governments faced a shortage of funds required for infrastructure.

He suggested that in places where there was a huge demand of roads the public private partnership model should be chosen and in other areas public funds should be utilised. Gadkari said attention should be paid to the quality of roads.

Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit said every government had to take a decision related to allocation of their budget and the needs of both urban and rural areas had to be factored in.
