Unfortunate Lokpal Bill couldn't be passed: PM
Our government is committed to the enactment of an effective Lokpal Bill, Manmohan Singh said.

New Delhi: The Prime Minister has broken his silence on the midnight Lokpal drama, in his message to the nation on New Year eve Manmohan Singh has spoken out on a host of issues-primary among them the Lokpal.

"The Lokpal and Lokayukta Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha. It is unfortunate that the Bill could not be passed in the Rajya Sabha. However, our government is committed to the enactment of an effective Lokpal act taken together with the Right to Information," Singh said.

"The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and the Right to Education Act are legislative legacies that generations of Indians will come to value, appreciate and benefit from," Singh added.

The Prime Minister in his New Year message talks about forgetting the past and he has a reason to do so because 2011 has been a particularly bad year as far as the UPA II is concerned. So to look ahead, it was a significant political message considering the upcoming elections which will also determine the future of the Congress as well as the Lokpal Bill.

The Prime Minister gave his assurance that while it was unfortunate that the Lokpal Bill couldn't be passed in Rajya Sabha but only in Lok Sabha where the governmentt had numbers, there was also a vision ahead statement where Singh promises a strong government which is often accused of policy paralysis promises a robust.

The Prime Minister also dwelled on other issues including the economy. He stressed on the need for further reforms saying, "Some of the reforms needed for economic security attract controversy and cause nervousness. This is understandable, but we should learn from our past experience with reforms. Things that we take for granted today caused similar controversy twenty years ago."
