Why Lock Away Gujarat MLAs in Karnataka, Amit Shah Asks Congress
Addressing a press conference in Lucknow, Amit Shah denied Congress’s allegations that its MLAs were being “poached” by the BJP ahead of the August 8 Rajya Sabha elections in Gujarat.

New Delhi: BJP chief Amit Shah on Monday questioned why the Congress had kept 44 of its Gujarat MLAs “locked" in a resort in Karnataka which ruled by the grand old party, even as the issue led to a ruckus in the Rajya Sabha.

Addressing a press conference in Lucknow, Shah denied Congress’s allegations that its MLAs were being “poached" by the BJP ahead of the August 8 Rajya Sabha elections in Gujarat.

“Why is the Congress keeping them locked in Bengaluru where they have their own government? Why are they not free to move?" Shah questioned.

The Congress had last week moved 44 Gujarat MLAs to a resort in Karnataka, saying it was “guarding" them from being “poached" by the BJP ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections in their home state.

The election on August 8 will be a clash of heavyweights from both parties. The Congress has nominated Ahmed Patel, a close aide of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, while the BJP has nominated party chief Amit Shah and Union minister Smriti Irani.

The Congress has sharpened its attack on the BJP since it lost power in Bihar last week after JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar broke away from the Mahagathbandhan to return to the NDA fold.

Hitting back, Amit Shah said, “In Congress rule, every leader considered himself to be the prime minister. But no one considered the actual prime minister the PM."

Referring to the developments in Bihar, Shah said, “Nitish Kumar resigned as he did not wish to be part of a corrupt government. There is no question of political corruption. Nitish Kumar broke the alliance with the RJD because of corruption issues."
