New Delhi:Christopher Poole, founder of 4Chan- the image-based anonymous message board- has sold his creation to the founder of 2channel- a board that inspired 4chan.
Poole has sold 4chan to Hiroyuki Nishimura, 2channel’s founder and the current editor-in-chief of Variety Japan.
While the handover might worry a few, Poole believes that he is putting his creation in good hands as Nishimura is the ‘only person in the world’ with as much experience running a message board like this.
A report on the New York Times notes the sale of 4chan comes as tens of millions of dollars in venture capital are pouring into sites like Reddit and Imgur, two independent web forums that regularly have hundreds of millions of monthly anonymous visitors.
Nishimura said in a statement, “I’m proud to be taking Mr. Poole’s place as the owner of 4chan,” adding, “I’ve long admired 4chan’s place on the web as a producer of anonymous and Internet culture, and look forward to continuing to grow and develop the site and support the community.”
With the sale, the question of monetization methods arises and whether 4chan will also lose out on its spirit as Reddit in pleasing advertisers by cleaning up the site.
