Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, officially confirmed the ongoing development of Apple’s generative AI features during today’s quarterly earnings call. Cook said that the company’s generative AI-powered software features are expected to be available to consumers “later this year.”
These remarks from Cook corroborate with the insights shared by industry experts, including Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Recent speculation suggests that iOS 18 is set to be the “biggest” update in the history of the operating system. iOS 18 is expected to be revealed later this year, during WWDC in summer.
“As we look ahead, we will continue to invest in these and other technologies that will shape the future. That includes artificial intelligence, where we continue to spend a tremendous amount of time and effort, and we’re excited to share the details of our ongoing work in that space later this year,” Tim Cook said.
Cook concluded by adding that there’s a “huge opportunity” for Apple with generative AI, but he can’t really go into the details just yet.
It isn’t clear how Apple will integrate generative AI in iOS, or perhaps even iPadOS and macOS, but reports say that it is expected to be included in key apps like Messages, Apple Music, Pages, Keynote, and, of course, Siri.
Also, Cook’s comments come at a time when most of its rivals, including Google and Samsung, have shipped not just one but a slew of generative AI-powered features with their recent flagships, so pressure is certainly mounting on Apple to match them. And, with AI becoming a major selling point for these smartphones, it is no wonder that Apple wants to jump on the train and reap the benefits itself.
