Apple users are being landed in a soup through a prank that uses the company’s voice assistant Siri.

A recent prank doing rounds on the internet tells the Apple users to say ‘108’ to Siri. Problem? Siri immediately calls up the Emergency Services upon this input.

A video of an Apple user saying “Hey Siri, 108” to her iPhone was shared on Facebook as a prank. The iPhone then called up the emergency services in the next 5 seconds.

108 is the emergency number used in India which is the equivalent of 911 in US. Apple users in US are being tricked through some posts on social media, into saying 108 to Siri. Siri detects an emergency upon this input and then calls up the localised emergency number to that area.

While some posts aimed at this prank as a good laugh, others misguided people by mentioning that doing this would initiate a three way call Facetime call.

Either ways, this has become a serious issue for the Emergency Services in the US. Such calls clog the flow of legitimate emergency calls to the services and might delay help to someone in need.

There are laws against calling the emergency services without any legitimate reason. Apple users are now being advised by the authorities not to fall for such pranks as there might be repercussions to this. Also read: Facebook to Test GIF Button For Comments
