New Delhi: It seems like Yahoo is all geared up to rekindle its popularity among consumers with a range of new products this year. The California-based company recently announced that it was working on a messaging app and now, it has unveiled its plans about a digital assistant.
During the company's conference on first quarter earnings, CEO Marissa Mayer discussed new products that Yahoo is working on, which included a mobile search or a personal assistant which could possibly rival the already popular Apple's Siri, Google Now, and Microsoft's Cortana.
A report on Business Insider says that Yahoo's search assistant is code-named Index and is going to be a smartphone app. The beta version of Index will be built sometime during the second quarter and advertising engineers are involved in the project- an indication that the app will be ad-supported.
Mayer touched upon some of the possible uses of the search assistant, for example, if a user has been emailing about an upcoming flight and searches for 'JFK', the app will know that the search is for the airport and not the president. It will further show flight details and related information.
While the project seems too ambitious, given the popularity current assistants enjoy, some industry sources believe that Yahoo will have an advantage over Google, Apple, and Microsoft because it has a much older relationship with its users.
