10/10 If You Can Solve This Brain Teaser By Harsh Goenka In Less Than 5 Seconds

Once in a while, it is helpful to solve a brain teaser or a puzzle, resolving some tricky problems has many cognitive benefits such as improved concentration and increased memory retention. Regularly solving puzzles can also help in improving an individual’s critical thinking. It also gives relief from anxiety or stress. Industrialist Harsh Goenka routinely shares brain teasers, puzzles with his 1.8 million X (Formerly Twitter) followers. Recently, Goenka shared a brain teaser that has little to do with mathematics and all to do with common sense.

The Chairperson of the RPG Group asked, “Your parents have 6 daughters including you, and each daughter has one brother. How many people are in the family?” This post gathered over 1.8 lakh views and over four hundred comments. While many people were able to solve the question, many others answered it humorously.

Responding humorously to Goenka’s post, an X user wrote, “140 crores because all Indians are my brothers and sisters.”

Many people responded with the answer as nine. An X user explained the equation and wrote, “You are one of the daughters. There are six other daughters. Each daughter has one brother. So, the total count is: Daughters: 6 (including you) Sons: 1 Adding these together: 6 (daughters) + 1 (son) = 7 children. Now, let’s include the parents: Mother and Father.”

Explaining similar logic, another X user wrote, “There are 6 daughters and 1 brother, but each daughter shares the same brother, so there’s only 1 unique brother. Therefore, there are a total of 6 daughters + 1 brother + 2 parents = 9 people in the family.”

Interestingly, an X user remarked that Goenka’s question is not fully clear and argued, “Incorrect question. Each sister can have 1 brother which means 6 brothers (at most). So the answer ranges from 9(6+2+1) to 15. Your question should have been how many MINIMUM number of people are there in the family? Sorry but math learnt in high school is catching up.”

An X user also came up with a strange answer as 10 and explained, “I will make it 10 considering that mother is also someone’s daughter and every daughter has a brother.”

Despite the variety of responses, the most popular answer to the above-mentioned brain teaser seems to be nine.
