A 130-year-old camera has been used to capture stunning images of a rugby match at Bath’s iconic Recreation Ground, England. The man behind the lens, Miles Myerscough-Harris, shared the final results via a social media post which went viral in no time. Harris is a professional photographer, who loves to “look at the world through a vintage lens,” as described in his Instagram bio. He got a shout-out from the Bath Rugby Club, who play their home games at the Recreation Ground in the Union Rugby season.
“Rugby shot on a 130-year-old panoramic camera. A stadium steeped in history, The Rec, home of Bath Rugby, has become one of the most iconic locations in the rugby world. To celebrate this rich history, it felt appropriate to capture it in all its glory on a camera that is over 130 years old, almost as old as the club itself,” Harris wrote in the caption of his Instagram post.

The video opens in a crowded stand of the rugby stadium where the photographer can be seen configuring the vintage camera. The ancient device was wrapped with a leather cover. Harris first took out the camera circuit and attached the film to the dedicated panel. He then kept his eye on the viewfinder and went on to press the shutter.
As expected, all the photographs were in black and white. Every frame had a grainy effect but the clarity was no doubt impressive. The panoramic lens also clicked a wide-angle photograph of the entire ground. In the picture, the floodlights in the backdrop of the night sky were clearly visible.
The video has already garnered more than 11 lakh views on Instagram. Viewers were left in awe after seeing the pictures and showered praise on the photographer.
“How magical. So atmospheric,” lauded a user. Another person asked if he would sell printed copies of the Recreation Ground clicks. “If so, I’d be really interested,” he added in the comment.
A user enquired about the film of the 130-year-old panoramic camera and revealed, “I haven’t bought film since switching to digital in 2001. And, I have been to the Rec a couple of times with my son, iconic place.” An iPhone user mentioned an iOS application that could be used to take vintage pictures with the same effect.
