Losing a pet can be incredibly tough, as they become a part of our family. For Judith Monarrez, a resident of Las Vegas, the pain of losing her Chihuahua mix, Gizmo, was especially hard. Nine years ago, her furry friend vanished from her backyard as a puppy, along with two other dogs. While the other two returned home, Gizmo was nowhere to be found and it was later revealed that someone had taken him. Monarrez was heartbroken but determined to find him, even creating a Facebook group to aid in the search. Despite her efforts, Gizmo remained missing for years. However, Monarrez recently received an email that reunited her with her long-lost pet after nine long years.
According to UPI news, an emergency veterinarian discovered Gizmo on the streets. After scanning his microchip, they reached out to Monarrez with the fantastic news. Monarrez quickly contacted the Animal Emergency Centre of Las Vegas, where the staff confirmed her pet’s identity. However, the vet found that Gizmo had several infections and dental disease, and required extreme care. Everyone was stunned by his poor condition and unsure of how he had survived all these years.
Speaking to the portal, Judith Monarrez said, “They told me a lady, a good Samaritan, it was a woman who dropped him off. They [the woman] said they spent two months trying to catch him. She wanted him back afterward, but then they told her she couldn’t have him because he had a microchip, he was scanned, and we were looking for him. So, it was kind of interesting. Something I thought would’ve happened years ago.”
Due to Gizmo’s serious health issues, Monarrez launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover the costly medical expenses. While the original goal was to raise $4000 (approximately Rs 3 lakh), the campaign surpassed her expectations and Monarrez has now received $6805 (approximately Rs 5 lakh) from 207 kind donors.
Thanking all the individuals for donation, the woman wrote, “I am in tears. He has been getting his footing around the house and has been cuddling up to his big brother Benji. He’s found his voice and we heard him bark at the doorbell for the first time since he’s been home. His eye infection seems to be responding well to the medications he was put on and he’ll be going to a follow-up in a week.”
Their reunion happened just in time when the Las Vegas city passed a rule that requires all pet owners to microchip their pets starting August 1.
