Chartered Accountant Compares IAS, CA's Average Salary, Internet Says 'Power is Above Money'

There has been an ongoing discourse regarding the driving force behind individuals opting for the most challenging examination, namely UPSC. Despite the immense toil and determination required, many argue that the salary of an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer is inadequate. This sentiment was succinctly articulated by a Chartered Accountant (CA) in a viral post, wherein he highlighted, “The average salary of an IAS is the starting salary of a CA.”

Sharing a screenshot to illustrate his point, CA Chirag Chauhan pointed out that the maximum salary of an IAS officer is Rs. 2,50,000 per month, which is the salary of the Cabinet Secretary of India. The base salary for an IAS officer is Rs. 56,100 per month, excluding additional allowances. Predictably, his post garnered significant attention, with many users offering their perspectives.

“Have you heard an IAS ever reporting to a CA. Ever!? (Unless the CA is a senior govt employee or a minister),” commented one user, highlighting the formidable power of IAS officers.

Another CA provided a more nuanced view, stating, “There is no comparison with any profession. Total seats of IAS in India are less than total no of CA’s qualify every attempt. Every year only 180 IAS are selected in India. IAS cadre seats are based on population and size of the state. CA is one of the best post qualification course for higher studies. People make their career in the area in which they wish to make according to their strength & ability.”

A third commenter expressed, “People wanting to join IAS are not motivated by money they are motivated by desire to serve people.”
