One can trust Coperni to come up with the most innovative dresses and accessories. Recently, the Paris-based brand revealed its Air Swipe bag, which is made with the lightest solid material on Earth. As per the brand, this bag weighs just 33 grams and is composed of “99% air and 1% glass.” The Air Swipe was put on the ramp during Coperni’s Paris Fashion Week show. The white clutch bag has created quite a buzz amongst fashion lovers and science enthusiasts alike. It is unclear how much this bag is going to cost once it is put on sale.
While sharing a video of the bag on Instagram, Coperni wrote, “Made of NASA’s nanomaterial silica aerogel, the lightest solid on planet Earth, the Air Swipe bag is made of 99% pure nothing and 1% glass, the glass of the future. This very delicate (and non-fragile) nanomaterial has been used by NASA to capture stardust: because it can withstand extreme heat (1200o Celsius) and a pressure of 4000 times its weight.” Coperni worked with Greece-based researcher and visual artist Ioannis Michalous to make the bag.

Commenting on the bag’s ‘unboxing’ video, an Instagram user asked, “Does it serve the function of a bag tho??” To this, the brand replied, “It can hold an iPhone ;)” Many people praised the brand for merging science, technology, and fashion to create truly innovative products. An Instagram user wrote, “As a materials engineer and fashion lover, I was amazed. Thank you for pushing the boundaries.” Expressing a similar sentiment, another person wrote, “This is what I love about Coperni. Their science spirit always brings out the most exciting item.”
Someone else complemented the brand and remarked, “Been wondering why no one has printed with aerogel microstructure! Well done fantastic to see more iterations. It feels amazing in your hand and tickles the brain with its visibility and mass but complete weightlessness.”
Coperni was founded in 2013 by Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant, who previously worked with Balenciaga and Chanel. While talking to British Vogue about their Air Swipe Bag, Vaillant described the bag as “magical, like a cloud”. He added, “this is the biggest object made with Aerogel on Earth”. Meyer described the clutch as “It’s scientific, but poetic.”
Last year, Coperni released the ‘Mini Meteorite Swipe Bag’ which was made out of a meteorite. It was priced at €40,000.00 (approximately Rs 35.51 lakhs). The official website of the French brand detailed that meteorites for the handmade bags were individually purchased from various locations around the world.
