Imagine if your landlord suddenly asks you to share your place with their daughter. Imagine: you’re living with a group of guys, and now you’re contemplating having a female roommate. In a society where the mere thought of young men and women living together raises eyebrows and stirs up doubts, this isn’t going to be a smooth ride, right? Well, when this very scenario unfolded for an MBBS student, he turned to social media for advice before taking the plunge.
“My flat owner messaged me that her daughter is appearing for NEET exam this year. She is not that good in studies and her physics is also very weak so she will take admission in our college(Private). She will live with me. What should I do? Should I ask her to decrease my rent?” Sachin posted on ‘X’, formerly Twitter. Providing more context, he mentioned living in a 3 BHK apartment where his landlord wants her daughter to have a separate room, emphasising the trust his landlord has in him. “She trusts me a lot. I wouldn’t be lying if I say she trusts me more than her son,” he added.

Highlighting the affordability of his living situation, Sachin explained, “Me and my 2 roommates live in a fully furnished 3 BHK flat in NCR. We pay a 19k + Electricity fee which means about 7k per person per month. It’s cheaper than College Hostel.” Soon, his post went viral, sparking a flurry of responses speculating on potential future scenarios.

“If you are a male and she is a female, it makes matters worse. The whole thing is fishy. Just don’t budge. Leave the place the minute she takes admission. This is a request from someone who is your parents’ age” cautioned one user. Another echoed concerns about the adjustment required in habits and lifestyle, highlighting the vulnerability to false accusations and legal entanglements. “You’re not responsible for her, if you’re not family” they emphasised.
Several comments focused on rent division, with one suggesting, “Yes obviously she needs to decrease the rent by half at least coz if you had a roommate they’d be paying half right?” “Rent should be divided between 4 people now,” proposed another.

In fact, the comment section resembled a minefield of potential predicaments, with many advising Sachin to think about moving out.
Don’t live with her! Reason: you don’t know when tables turn and you are accused! Be practical think about urself be selfish! What if your flat owner says to help her daughter for studies? U too have a life! Living in different rooms but in same house not good!— Dr Zee (@kyun_zainab) February 15, 2024
Her presence will require all three boys to adjust habits and living style in ways that you might not have anticipated. And frankly, you are one false accusation away from being thrown out or worse, facing legal issues. Yes, you should ask her to reduce the rent. But honestly, I’d think a dozen times before letting their daughter in. You’d miss your privacy and a few other things that many others already mentioned.— Shweta Sharan (@shwesharan) February 16, 2024
So, do you think it’s a bad idea?
