Doctor Calls Out Instagram's Policy On Alcohol Content: ‘IG Is Funny’
The doctor finds it ironic that while educational content on liver health is restricted, discussions about drinking alcohol is permitted.

Dr Cyriac Abby Philips, recognised as The Liver Doc across social media platforms, recently shed light on the harmful effects of alcohol consumption on the liver through two photos. Despite his efforts to debunk health related myths, Dr Philips faced a hurdle when Instagram sent him notification for violating their rules. The post compared the livers of a 52 year old non drinker and a 29 year old drinker, showing the difference in their health. While the non drinker’s liver looked healthy and pink, the drinker’s liver appeared shrunken and darker. Despite the platform’s action, Dr Philips’ educational post remains accessible on Instagram. In the X (Formerly Twitter) post, the doctor finds it ironic that while educational content on liver health is restricted, but discussions about ‘drinking alcohol, different types of alcohol and how to drink alcohol,’ are permitted.

Dr Philips has been outspoken about liver health on social media. Most recently, he made headlines for calling out actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu for misleading her fans over her alleged opinion on liver detox methods during a health podcast. Meanwhile, the doctor criticised Instagram’s policy and wrote, “Instagram (IG) is funny. Post about alcohol, drinking alcohol, different types of alcohol, how to drink alcohol: This does not violate our rules. We will recommend it. Post about what alcohol can do to your liver: This violates our rules. We will not recommend it.”

A user agreed with Dr Cyriac Abby Philips’ post but suggested that few individuals might find it uncomfortable to view graphic images of internal organs.

Another suggested the government print similar liver images on alcohol products, just like the warning labels on tobacco products.

An individual shared their belief that consuming alcohol in the gap of 3-4 months would not pose any health issues.

A user praised Dr Cyriac Abby Philips for his work in spreading awareness about liver health and claimed that many feel discomfort when confronted with the truth.

Dr Cyriac Abby Philips has previously criticised alternative forms of medicine, including Ayurveda, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy, claiming that these medications lack scientific evidence and may be risky for patients. His perspective on this matter had stirred controversy, leading to the suspension of his X account. This action came after Himalaya Wellness Corporation filed a complaint in a Bengaluru court, accusing Dr Philips of making defamatory statements against the company.
