Have You Heard of Jain Sushi? Desi Twist to Japanese Cuisine Receives a Thumbs Down on Internet
Jain Sushi? This Desi twist to Japanese dish is sending the internet in a collective meltdown.

In a culinary love story that stretches across continents, cultures, and taste buds, lies the irresistible tale of Indians and their passionate affair with sushi. A dish once confined to the shores of Japan, sushi has embarked on a journey that has captivated hearts and palates around the globe. And in India, it’s not just a dish – it’s a sensation, an emblem of sophistication that everyone clamours to experience to add a dash of ‘fancy’ to their lives. However, just as the excitement peaked with a woman sharing her experience of trying Jain Sushi, featuring bell peppers as filling, not everyone was sold on the idea.

Posted on ‘X’ by the user @pavbhajilover, one image showcased a colourful array of sushi, while another highlighted a unique white variant filled with tutti frutti-like bell peppers. Despite the traditional Japanese dish typically comprising vinegared rice seasoned with sugar and salt, adorned with an assortment of ingredients including vegetables and meats, predominantly seafood, this vegetarian adaptation failed to resonate with many internet users.

Take a Look:

“You spelled ‘Mithai’ wrong,” teased one commentator. “Do you pair it with ketchup or imli chutney?” jested another. A third individual lamented, “this is food crime.”

Nonetheless, this isn’t the first instance of a Desi twist on sushi. Previously, the fusion of dal chawal and sushi sparked intrigue. While both dal chawal and sushi earn individual acclaim, users remain divided over this particular blend. Anushree Bhutadaan, an Instagram aficionado, showcased a creatively presented dal chawal, fashioned to resemble sushi. She described its harmonious blend of flavours, describing it as a combination of sweetness, spice, and sourness, akin to a comforting embrace. Key ingredients included plain rice, pomegranate, garlic chutney, onion, sukhi dal (dry lentils), and dal tadka.
