Cybercriminals employ various tactics, ranging from cracking examination systems to deceiving unsuspecting individuals, as evidenced by a recent incident in Jamui town, Bihar. Here, a couple fell victim to a fraudulent scheme orchestrated by cybercriminals, resulting in the loss of their hard-earned money.
Kishore Kumar and his wife Sunita Kumari, residents of Pipradih locality, received a distressing call from an unknown number. The caller, claiming to represent the DGP Office, alleged that their daughter had been involved in an altercation with a minister’s son. Purporting to be acting in the best interest of the couple’s daughter, the fraudster demanded an immediate transfer of Rs 35,000 to purportedly resolve the situation.
Exploiting the couple’s concern for their daughter’s safety, the criminal spun a tale of dire consequences if the ransom wasn’t paid promptly. Fabricating emotional distress by stating that their daughter was crying and emphasising the urgency of the situation, the scammer coerced the couple into transferring the funds without verifying the authenticity of the claims.
Driven by fear and anxiety, Kishore Kumar and Sunita Kumari succumbed to the pressure and transferred Rs 25,000 to the criminal’s account. Their daughter, who resides abroad for educational purposes, was eventually contacted by the worried parents. Through this conversation, the truth emerged – their daughter was not embroiled in any such scandal.
Realising the gravity of their error, the family promptly initiated legal action against the cybercriminals by registering a case at the cyber cell branch. The incident highlights the shady methods employed by cybercriminals to exploit vulnerable individuals for monetary gain.
Currently, authorities are investigating the matter, aiming to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent similar scams in the future. This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and verification when faced with suspicious requests or claims, particularly in the realm of cybercrime where deception knows no bounds.
