The dolphin was reportedly discovered stranded on a North Carolina beach after being washed out of its natural habitat.

Pink dolphins have been making waves on social media lately, leaving viewers in wonder. Now, a series of pictures have been doing the rounds on X (formerly known as Twitter), claiming that the rare aquatic mammal was spotted in the USA’s North Carolina. The dolphin was discovered stranded on a North Carolina beach after being washed out of its natural habitat. The images made the internet rub their eyes in disbelief; however, after examining the visuals closely, social media users found that the said dolphin had an unusual plastic look, and they regarded it as fake or AI-generated.

Posting images on social media, an X user who goes by the name Facts Matter wrote, “Rare pink dolphin spotted off the coast of North Carolina!”

The pictures of the pink dolphin went viral in no time, captivating thousands on social media. The post has soon amassed a plethora of comments. A majority expressed that the pictures looked fake or AI-generated, as the word ‘cola’ is seen on the dolphin’s forehead upon closer examination. Further, when zoomed in, it appears to be a plastic toy rather than a real animal. However, some praised the image and called the creature beautiful.

An X user commented, “Definitely not. It’s so beautiful.”

“It’s not AI. They show up every now and then. Last one was a few years ago, near Louisiana. Albino dolphins are just rare,” shared a user.

An account remarked, “While pink dolphins may exist, these particular images appear to me to be AI, in my opinion.”

“Pink dolphin photographed off the coast of North Carolina. I would throw my beer down and get right if I saw this! LOL,” a comment read.

An individual posted, “That’s either a very nicely done toy or a dolphin that manages to keep the same posture in all of the photos.”

“People keep sharing that fake AI pink dolphin on Facebook, we’re doomed,” tweeted a person.

Pink dolphin spotting is extremely rare. Experts at the World Wildlife Fund have recognised this special creature as the Amazon River dolphin. Also known as boto or the pink river dolphin, these mammals inhabit freshwater regions and are predominantly found in the Amazon and Orinoco River basins in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and a few other locations.
