UK Polls 2024: Rishi Sunak Trends On Google As Britain Votes In General Election
Amid UK general election 2024, Rishi Sunak is trending in India, as his name is currently in the eighth spot on Google Trends.

Millions of voters across the UK have been heading to polling stations to decide their next leader in the general election. Rishi Sunak, the current Prime Minister since October 2022, is leading the Conservative Party. On the other hand Keir Starmer, the Labour Party leader, is his main opponent. In recent weeks, both leaders have been working hard to impress British citizens with their visions for the nation’s future. Meanwhile, not just in the UK, Sunak also started trending in India.

The term ‘Rishi Sunak’ is currently in the eighth spot on Google Trends. Interest in Sunak started climbing on June 27 and reached its peak today, as people in the UK choose whether to support the Conservative Party or not.

Interestingly, the Conservatives have led the country for the past 14 years, represented by five different PMs. Sunak, who took over from the Liz Truss administration, became the UK’s first non-white Prime Minister and aims to continue his leadership.

On election day, registered voters across 650 constituencies will head to the polls to choose their MPs using the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system. To secure a victory, a party must win at least 326 seats. The party with the most MPs usually forms the new government and its leader will become the PM.

A day before the 2024 general elections, Rishi Sunak shared a motivating post on Instagram and wrote, “This election will determine the future of our country. Higher taxes with Labour, or lower taxes with me. Higher immigration with Labour, or lower immigration with me. Higher crime with Labour, or safer streets with me. You’ve got less than 17 hours to save Britain from a Labour supermajority.”

The polling stations for the 2024 UK general election opened at 7 am and will remain open until 10 pm. After the polls close, the counting of votes will begin and final results are expected to be declared on July 5.

The main political parties are the Conservative Party, Labour Party, Liberal Democrats, Scottish National Party (SNP), Plaid Cymru, Green Party and Reform UK. Prominent candidates include Rishi Sunak, Keir Starmer, Ed Davey, Nicola Sturgeon and Adam Price. Among the 650 seats, 543 belong to England, 57 are with Scotland, Wales has 32 and 18 in Northern Ireland.
