New Delhi: In a shocking incident, an off-duty policeman shot Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrei Karlov dead on Monday at an art gallery in Ankara (Turkey). The assassination of the Russian ambassador marks a dangerous escalation of tension in the region and beyond. However, the gunman has been identified as Mevlut Mert Altintas and he killed Karlov to avenge the 'killings' by Russian forces in Aleppo.

- Twenty-two-year-old Mevlut Mert Altintas, who assassinated Russian ambassador to Turkey Andrei Karlov at an art museum in Ankara on Monday, had worked for Ankara riot police for two and a half years.

- Before killing the Russian ambassador Mevlut allegedly shouted, “We die in Aleppo, you die here". The gunman was killed by special forces. Three other people were injured. CNN Turk TV reported that police had detained Mevlut's sister and mother.

- A video showed the attacker shouting: "Don't forget Aleppo, don't forget Syria!" and "Allahu Akbar" ("God is Greatest") as screams rang out. He paced about and shouted as he held the gun in one hand and waved the other in the air.

- The attacker was smartly dressed in black suit and tie and stood, alone, behind the ambassador as he began his speech at the art exhibition, a person at the scene said.

- Mevlut took out his gun and shot the ambassador Andrei from behind when he was giving a talk at the art exhibit. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a witness said he saw Andrei lying on the floor and then he ran out. People took refuge in adjoining rooms as the shooting continued.
