India ended their ICC tournament trophy drought with a nerve-jangling win over South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 final at Bridgetown, Barbados, thus claiming their sixth ICC trophy. This was India’s first ICC trophy in ten years after winning the Champions Trophy under the leadership of MS Dhoni in 2013. Since 2013, India has played 5 ICC tournament finals across formats, losing each one of them before today, but the sixth time, India finally broke the jinx; making Rohit Sharma only the third Indian captain to lift an ICC trophy.
Here’s a look at India’s all-six ICC Trophy Triumphs
2024 T20 World Cup
India had a dominant run coming into the finals, especially brushing aside Australia in Super 8 and then demolishing England in the semi-final, to make their third appearance in the T20 World Cups. Up against South Africa, Virat Kohli made it count in the big stage with a gritty 59-ball 76 and aided well by Axar Patel (47 off 31) as India posted 176/7. South Africa lost two wickets early, but Heinrich Klassen almost put the game out of India’s hand before Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya ensured a nervy win for India.
2013 Champions Trophy:
It turned out to be a 20-over final due to heavy rain showers at Edgbaston. India could set a target of 130 runs on the slow wicket. England’s batters surrendered early in front of the Indian spinners and lost the match by five runs.
2011 ODI World Cup:
It was a fairytale night in Mumbai where MS Dhoni struck a six to secure the second ODI World Cup title. After Sri Lanka posted 274 runs on the board, Gautam Gambhir stepped up with a game-changing 97-run knock. Dhoni remained unbeaten at 91 as India completed the chase with ten balls to spare.
2007 T20 World Cup
India defended a 157-run target in Johannesburg to beat Pakistan in the final. Irfan Pathan was named the Player of the Match after fetching a three-wicket haul. Gautam Gambhir was the top-scorer for India with 75 runs.
2002 Champions Trophy
Rain played a spoilsport after Sri Lanka scored 244 in the Champions Trophy final. On the reserve day, the islanders folded their innings with 222 runs before the match stopped due to weather issues. After the final match was called, India and Sri Lanka shared the title.
1983 World Cup
India batted first in the final at Lord’s and registered 183 runs. The West Indies top-order fell victim to Madan Lal, who picked three wickets. Among the other Indian bowlers, Mohinder Amarnath also recorded a three-wicket haul as the Caribbean unit wrapped up their innings at 140 runs.
