MI vs DC: Mumbai Indians Beat Delhi Capitals at Wankhede to Register Their First Victory in IPL 2024
views
Mumbai Indians finally registered their first win of IPL 2024, beating Delhi Capitals by 29 runs at the Wankhede stadium on Sunday afternoon. The hosts put up a mammoth 234-run total on the board, courtesy of Romario Shepherd’s brutal assault in the last over in which he scored 32 runs off Anrich Nortje.
This total on the board was a job half done by Mumbai as they had left a huge mountain to climb for the visitors. Both the teams now have one victory each in the season so far.

Delhi’s bowling is a huge cause of concern for them as they have conceded 230+ twice in a row now. Even their batting, apart from some individual brilliance, has failed to step up together as a team. For Mumbai, this is a crucial win as they play two big teams at home going ahead this week. Hardik Pandya and co. will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on April 11, followed by the ‘El-Classico’ of IPL, MI vs Chennai Super Kings on April 14.

1st Innings
Mumbai Indians started on a positive note, adding 33 runs in the first three overs. In the 4th over, Rohit smashed two consecutive sixes over mid-wicket to Jhye Richardson and continued his assault in the next over, smashing Axar over deep fine leg for a six. Mumbai were 50-up in just 20 minutes to the game and the scoreboard read 75 for no loss at the end of Powerplay.
Axar dismissed Rohit for 49 in the seventh over while Suryakumar Yadav could not deliver in his comeback match as he failed to open his account. Delhi Capitals were supercharged in the field as they jumped upon every ball to save one or two runs here and there.
Ishan Kishan was dismissed by a blinder from Axar Patel off his own bowling. Kishan tried hitting one from the left of Axar but the left-arm spinner showed great reflexes to pluck his left arm out and grab the ball.
Khaleel Ahmed then dismissed Tilak Varma in the 13th and Mumbai were 138 for 4 in overs with Hardik on 31 and Tim David on 4.
It was probably the last over of Mumbai Indians’ innings that sealed the deal for the home team. Romario Shepherd, brought in for Kwena Maphaka, smashed 32 runs in the last over by Nortje.
4, 6, 6, 6, 4, 6 – This is how the last over read.
2nd Innings
Delhi Capitals lost David Warner in the Powerplay after which Prithvi Shaw and Abhishek Porel joined forces. Shaw hit the top gear in the 9th over, smashing three boundaries to Gerald Coetzee and bringing up his first fifty this season.
As Shaw looked on course to a big innings, Hardik brought out his biggest weapon to stop the DC opener in his tracks. Jasprit Bumrah delivered his fiery yorker to castle Shaw’s stumps in the 12th over and then dismissed Porel in the 15th over with Tim David taking a good catch at long-on.
The focus was now on Pant who was dropped on 1 run by Coetzee off his bowling but the DC skipper’s wicket was inevitable as he handed a high catch to Hardik Pandya on the very next ball.
Meanwhile, Stubbs, the last proper batter in the line-up, notched up his fifty in just 19 balls, giving a ray of hope to the visitors. However, his attacking innings wasn’t enough for Delhi in the end.
Brief Scores:
Mumbai Indians: 234 for 5 in 20 overs (Rohit Sharma 49 off 27 balls, Romario Shepherd 39 not out, Tim David 45 not out; Axar Patel 2/35) vs DC 205 for 8 in 20 overs (Tristan Stubbs 71 not out, Prithvi Shaw 66; Gerald Coetzee 4/34).
