JNU to Establish Centres for Hindu, Buddhist and Jain Studies
According to an official notification by JNU, the three new centres will be established under the School of Sanskrit and Indian Studies, it said.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University is all set to open Centres for Hindu Studies, Buddhist Studies as well as Jain Studies. According to an official notification, the three new centres will be established under the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies, it said.

A committee was formed by JNU to explore the implementation of the National Education Policy (2020) and the Indian Knowledge System at the university. The decision to set up the three new centres was approved by the Executive Council of the varsity in a meeting held on May 29.

“The Executive Council in its meeting held on 29.05.2024 has approved the recommendation of the committee constituted to explore and recommend on NEP-2020 and Indian Knowledge System and its further implementation in the University, and establishing of following centres within the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies,” the notification read.

Last year, Delhi University (DU) started a new postgraduate programme on MA in Hindu Studies. According to the university, the MA course has been designed to integrate the rich heritage of Hindu philosophy with modern subjects such as computer science, informatics, commerce, and political science. It caters to diverse aspirants, emphasising both contemporary career prospects and a deep understanding of the Hindu ethos, it said. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in any field are eligible to apply for the programme that offers a total of 60 seats.

In 2022, the Banaras Hindu University introduced a Master’s programme in Hindu Studies in line with the new National Education Policy 2020. A total of 45 students were admitted to the first batch out of which one was a foreign student, BHU had said. The course includes nine compulsory and seven optional papers. Prof VK Shukla, vice-chancellor of BHU had said that the course will make the world aware of many unknown aspects of Hindu Dharma and help in taking its teachings to more people.
