London: In a dramatic development simmering around the Stamford Bridge, it has been reported that Jose Mourinho might return to Chelsea this summer. While Avram Grant has emerged as a top contender to see through the rest of the club's season following Rafael Benitez's displeasure to continue.

Benitez criticised both the board and sections of fans after Wednesday night match against Middlesborough, which Chelsea won. Moreover, the Spaniard has confirmed that he won't be staying beyond the end of his contract this summer. But on the other hand, Chelsea are planning to end his tenure before that.

Recently Grant has been seen attending matches at Stamford Bridge and according to the Evening Standard he could take charge temporarily with Mourinho being the hot favourite to make a comeback.

Benitez was seen at the training ground on Thursday after making his intentions of leaving the club public. He berated the board for appointing him as 'interim' manager and some section of fans indulging in chanting and displaying banners.

Added to that the results and his tactics could also lead to his premature departure from Chelsea, as reported. Despite being less popular at Chelsea after succeeding Mourinho in 2007, Grant could be the temporary replacement. Two weeks ago during a match, Grant was seen with Roman Abramovich in the owner's box. But the Special One who has won five trophies at Chelsea is moving closer of sealing the deal.

To confirm more, the Evening Standard has reported that Mourinho is almost certain to leave Real Madrid after disagreements with few high-profile players and the club's hierarchy and can attract host of Europe's top clubs.

Paris St-Germain and Manchester City have already showed interest, but Chelsea are in the pole position to rope in Mourinho. It is believed that Mourinho is ready to work under Abramovich once again under certain conditions. Firstly, he wants greater control over the club's transfer policy and secondly needs guarantees over less interference from Abramovich in team affairs
