You'll need three things for crafting terracotta: A furnace: You can craft your own furnace or use the one in a village weaponsmith's house. Any fuel source: For example, coal, charcoal, and logs would work. 1 clay block: You'll need 1 clay block per terracotta block. When mining clay without a Silk Touch tool, the clay will break into 4 clay balls. You can combine these back into a clay block by placing them in a 2 by 2 square in the crafting menu.
Place the clay block in the furnace. You can go mining to find clay in lush caves, underwater, and at the bottom of lakes and rivers. It will also appear in mason houses in desert, savanna, and plains villages.
Place the fuel source in the furnace. This will begin smelting the clay block into a terracotta block. The fire fuel indicator will turn yellow and red. You can use any fuel source, such as coal, charcoal, and logs. Most items made of wood can also be used! Wait for the smelting to complete. This will take a few seconds.
Click the terracotta block to place it in your inventory. You're done! Repeat as needed to get as many terracotta blocks as you need. These blocks look great in a modern house, underground base, or farm. If you're playing in creative mode in the future, you can just search your creative inventory for "terracotta" to obtain it.
Crafting Dyed Terracotta
Gather the required materials. You'll need two ingredients for crafting dyed terracotta: 1 dye: This can be any color of dye. You can obtain different color dyes by smelting plants, combining dye colors, or trading with a wandering trader. For example, cyan is made by combining blue and green dye. 8 terracotta blocks: Craft these using the above method.
Open the crafting menu. Dyed terracotta is made using the 3 by 3 crafting menu.
Place the dye in the center slot of the crafting menu.
Place the 8 terracotta around the dye. The terracotta blocks should now make up the sides of the crafting menu.
Click the dyed terracotta blocks to add them to your inventory. You're ready to use them in your latest build! Or, use the next method to smelt them into glazed terracotta.
Crafting Glazed Terracotta
Gather the required materials. You'll need three things for crafting glazed terracotta: A furnace: You can craft your own furnace or use the one in a village weaponsmith's house. Any fuel source: For example, coal, charcoal, and logs would work. 1 dyed terracotta block: This can be any color!
Place the dyed terracotta block in the furnace. Each color produces a glazed terracotta block with a unique geometric design. For example, white glazed terracotta has a yellow, white, and blue gem-like look, while magenta glazed terracotta has an arrow on it.
Place the fuel source in the furnace. This will begin smelting the dyed terracotta block into a glazed terracotta block. The fire fuel indicator will turn yellow and red. Wait for the smelting to complete. This will take a few seconds.
Click the glazed terracotta block to place it in your inventory. You're done! Repeat as needed to get as many glazed terracotta blocks as you need.
Where to Find Terracotta
Head to a village. Different villages have different terracotta colors: Plains villages have normal terracotta in mason houses. You can also find white terracotta as part of houses. Desert villages also have normal terracotta in houses, lamps, and meeting points. There can be lime terracotta in their mason houses. Savanna villages have red, orange, and yellow terracotta as part of some houses.
Go to the badlands biome. You can find normal terracotta as well as light gray, white, brown, yellow, orange, and red.
Check out a desert pyramid. There will sometimes be orange and blue terracotta blocks.
Look in warm underwater ruins. You can obtain light blue terracotta blocks there.
