How to Tame, Breed, and Keep Frogs in Minecraft
Frogs are some of the cutest and funkiest mobs in Minecraft, so it’s totally understandable that you’d want some on your farm. In this article, we’ll walk you through exactly how to lure and catch a frog, so you can visit it whenever you’d like.
Things You Should Know
  • Attach a lead to a frog and a nearby fencepost to keep it in one place.
  • Walk around while holding a slimeball to get frogs to follow you. Then, lead the frogs to a secure enclosure.
  • Breed two frogs by feeding them both slimeballs near an open body of water.

Can you tame frogs in Minecraft?

No, you can’t tame frogs like you can tame wolves. While frogs can be fed, bred, and kept as pets, they’ll still wander off unless they’re kept in an enclosure.

How to Get Minecraft Frogs

Tie a frog to a fence post with a lead. While holding the lead, right-click on the frog to attach the rope. Then, use the same control to tie the other end of the lead to a fence post, which keeps the frog in a certain area. Multiple frogs can be tied to the same fence post. Console controls: Mobile: Tap Leash PlayStation: L2 Xbox: LT Nintendo Switch: ZL Need a lead? Scavenge one from an Ancient City, Woodland mansion, or some Trail ruins, or make one using a slimeball and 4 pieces of string.

Lead frogs to an enclosure with slimeballs. Minecraft frogs love to eat slimeballs and will follow you around if you have one equipped. While holding one, lead the frog to a secure enclosure on your farm. Minecraft frogs can jump up to 8 blocks high, so it’s best to keep them in a secure enclosure with a roof.

How to Breed Minecraft Frogs

Feed two frogs slimeballs near a body of water. While holding the slimeball, right-click, tap, or use the corresponding console button to feed the frogs—hearts will appear over them once they’re successfully fed. Make sure that there’s at least 1 block of air above the body of water; otherwise, the frogs won’t be able to lay eggs in it. You can get slimeballs by finding and killing slimes.

Watch the frog lay eggs in the water. After a few seconds, one of the frogs will lay eggs on top of a water block. These are known as frogspawn in the game.

Wait 10 minutes for tadpoles to hatch from the eggs. After 10 real-life minutes pass, tadpoles will start swimming in the body of water. Pick up the tadpoles in a bucket and put them in the water of a different biome to spawn different-colored frogs. Green frogs come from cold biomes (like a snow-covered mountain), orange frogs come from temperate biomes (like regular swamps), and white frogs come from warm biomes (like a savannah, desert, mangrove swamp, or jungle)

Wait 20 minutes for the tadpole to grow into a frog. Depending on the biome you’re in, an orange, white, or green frog will emerge and start hopping around.

What's your reaction?
