And, miles to go before I sleep

With Olympics 2012 in full swing, India yet again has its hope pinned on another game where people will cheer for those who have conquered life despite adversities thrown their way.

The Paralympics 2012 is one such event where everyone cheers for humanity, irrespective of who is representing which country or state.

H N Girish, a young lad from Karnataka, is one of the shortlisted candidates to represent India at the Paralympics in high jump. The athlete who has a deformed left leg has proved time and again that nothing is impossible.

Given the wide variety of disabilities that Paralympics athletes have, there are several categories in which the athletes compete.

The allowable disabilities are broken down into six broad categories namely amputee, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, wheelchair, visually impaired, and Les Autres.

Hailing from Hassan, Girish was one of those unfortunate people who could not afford to seek any medical help for his injured leg.

The high jumper had clinched a bronze at the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports (IWAS) games in 2009.

He had leapt to a distance of 1.72 metres to pocket 860 points. However, Girish lost the silver medal by eight points to his team-mate Sanjay Kumar. He had also participated in the IWAS Games in Chinese Taipei and the Asian paralympics meet in Kuala Lumpur, couple of years ago.

Recently, the Olympic-bound athlete was felicitated by the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Jagadish Shettar. Other paralympics athletes who were felicitated include Farman Basha (power lifting) and Sharath Gayakwad (swimming).

The London 2012 Paralympics Games will be held from August 29 to September 9.
