CPM seeking to regain lost glory
CPM seeking to regain lost glory

In an attempt to regain its lost glory after the murder of w T P Chandrashekaran at Onchium and Muslim League activist Abdul Shukoor in Kannur, the CPM has for the first time observed martyr’s day in memory of Changarankandath Subramanian at the Kadavaram martyrs’ hall in Anthikadu here on Wednesday, after a hiatus of 41 years.

Though the CPM had earlier claimed that Subramanian was a CPM supporter, the party had not organised any programmes such as martyrdom day until now.

The issue came to light after a recent tug-of-war between the CPM and CPI over the legacy of political killings in the state.

Pinrayi Vijyan had publicly stated that the CPI had killed CPM leader Subramanyan at Anthikkad. He also said that CPM activists Balakrishnan and Sudheendran were killed by CPI men in Alappuzha.

In reply, CPI leaders Kanam Rajendran and V S Sunil Kumar MLA had said that Subramanian was not a CPM worker but a Congressman. They had flayed the CPM for misrepresenting the facts and misleading the public. The outburst had souredrelations between the two parties.

According to locals and relatives of Subrmanyan,  he had no connection with CPM and the murder was related to some personal issues. He was not even a loyalist to any political movements.

He was stabbed when he tried to rescue his friend and neighbour, Pookkattil Subramanyan, an active CPM worker, in 1970, they recall.

Sreelatha, daughter of Pookkattil Subramanian, recalls that a group of CPI workers led by Paran Sreedharan had attacked her father.

Local people allege that the party is declaring independent persons who were killed in suspicious circumstances as martyrs now.

The party has done nothing for the family of Subramanian for the past 41 years, but now have come up with claims that he was an active marxist, they add.
