KOCHI: The Ernakulam Rotary Club will soon begin the renovation works of the Ravipuram crematorium . As per the agreement between the Kochi Corporation and the Rotary Club, the agency will modernise the existing crematorium that uses firewood for cremation into an eco-friendly one which will work on biogas and solar energy. The existing crematorium will continue to run till the new one becomes functional. The renovation work will be carried out by the Rotary Club at an estimated cost of `1.5 crore. It is also learnt that the agency has bought the solar furnace for the crematorium after conducting an analysis on various technologies used in some of the major cities in the country. The electric crematorium was inaugurated in the late 90s but its functioning was frequently interrupted and finally came to a standstill in 2008. The electric connection to the crematorium was disconnected in 2009. Later, the then-Corporation authorities renovated the crematorium at Ravipuram. However, during renovation, the electric crematorium was made functional on firewood. The authorities also found that the operational cost of the crematorium is very high as it is using firewood for crematiom. As per the new plan, the renovated crematorium will have a prayer hall where the bodies can be kept for relatives to pay their last respects. The gas for the furnaces will be produced from coconut, cashew shells, wood and other eco-friendly materials. The renovation work will be completed within six months.
