ERODE: Many residents of Odapalli village in Namakkal district blamed TNEB for the mishap. Sources said that the Vandipalayam barrage was a new one and the the power production was not continuous. Hence, water was to be released and stopped in frequent intervals. A fisherman Gobi of Kadachallur, who witnessed the incident, which occurred between 12.30 pm and 1 pm, said the sudden release of water caused the mishap. After seeing the heavy flow of water, Charles Smith, one of the victims, raised an alarm. Holding on to his two daughters, he tried to collect the clothes he had kept on the side. But within a few seconds, all of them were washed away, said the fisherman. “If there was a siren to warn people before the release, the mishap could have been averted,” he felt.If the TNEB releases water without informing the public in advance, mishaps are bound to happen. Also, people have no idea of exact days of water release. DSP Arumugam said some among the two families were said to be working in Dubai or Saudi Arabia. Erode RDO Dr Sugumar visited the spot and held an inquiry.
