CHENNAI: Bharatnatyam, bhangra and musical medleys marked the 48th College Day celebration of Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav (DG Vaishnav) College here on Thursday.Focusing on education as knowledge, a path to emancipation and empowerment, a tool of transformation and an embodiment of humaneness, the students performed cultural programmes set to both traditional music andpoetry readings. A musical medley with the theme of world peace wasrendered by second year students.The annual college report was presented by the Principal, Dr S Narasimhan, in the form of an audio-visual presentation with the academic and extracurricular achievements of students and faculty highlighted. He said, "I appreciate the exemplary behaviour and involvement of the students in upholding the ethos of the college and bringing credit and laurels to it, on the academic front and in other spheres, especially community service. The efforts of the management to promote learning among bright and needy students needs special mention." Dr Narasimhan added that the college, along with the Government of Tamil Nadu and other charitable institutions, has extended help worth ` 44 lakh to 1,271 students in the current academic year.Chief Guest Sriram V Rajagopal, VP of Human Resources, India and APAC, Cognizant, applauded the students for their involvement and hard work,which has brought recognition to their college. "I myself am an alumnus ofDG Vaishnav, having done both graduation and post graduation here. I was an active member of the NCC. I can say today that it was what I learned and experienced here that has stood me in good stead through my career," he said. The college magazine for the year 2011, VIKAS (Vaishnav Initiative for Knowledge in Arts and Science), was released and the first copy presented to the mother of Subramani, writer of the best article. The retiring staff were honoured for their years of service and awards for the best outgoing students were presented. Others present at the event were secretary of the college P Haridas, and joint secretary Srikumar Fomra.
