New Delhi: Facebook temporarily banned The New Yorker's cartoon page for violating their community standards on "Nudity and Sex". The cartoon, drawn by New Yorker's author Mick Stevens, had a naked Adam and Eve leaning against a tree, with nipples-as-dots fully exposed.
After Facebook banned the page, the author drew the cartoon again, featuring the couple in clothes, "but the gain in clothes caused too great a loss in humour," wrote Robert Mankoff, cartoon editor, The New Yorker, in a blog post.
As per Facebook's banning guidelines, unearthed by Gawker earlier this year reads, "1. any obvious sexual activity, even if naked parts are hidden from view by hands, clothes or other objects/art included; 2. while naked private parts including female nipple bulges and naked butt cracks; male nipples are ok."
Mick's original cartoon was in accordance with the first rule, while it failed to meet the second rule. Many see this as an attack on freedom of expression.
