The petitioner said that the action of the State Electricity Regulatory Commission and the KSEB to increase the power tariff was illegal. The petitioners pointed out that the state government and the KSEB were not interested in collecting electricity charge arrears from public sector undertakings. The commission had recommended a 30 per cent hike in the charges. Even the present tariff is higher than what was being paid by the consumers in New Delhi. The reason cited for the increase was the rise in the cost of production of power and inflation.The petitioners said that the 30 per cent increase in the domestic tariff had hit the monthly budget of the common man. If the total arrears were collected, there would not be any need for revising the tariff.
